Wine education has a reputation for being expensive, and a classroom certificate course can easily run into hundreds of pounds, euros or dollars before you have opened a single bottle. What far fewer people realise is that many of the world's best-known wine regions run their own online schools and charge nothing for them.
I have taken many of the courses on this list myself, and I rate them highly for one simple reason: they give you a complete picture of a region straight from the source. The people who write these modules grow the grapes, write the rules and taste the wines every day, so you learn the history, soils, grapes and styles the way the region itself understands them, and not through a third-hand summary.
Why wine regions teach for free
The logic is economic. Regional bodies such as the Comité Champagne, Rioja's Consejo Regulador and the Chianti Classico Consorzio exist to promote their wines, and every sommelier, retailer or curious drinker who understands a region is more likely to recommend or order it. Education is one of the most effective marketing tools they have, so they fund it themselves. For you, that means expert-level content at no cost.

Spain
1. Rioja Wine Academy
The official school of the Rioja appellation offers several free online courses, from a four-hour introduction to a 15-hour diploma, with certificates issued by the region's regulatory council. Courses run in English, Spanish and Chinese. The tasting course asks you to buy the wines yourself.
2. Sherry Academy
A free online course on the two sherry appellations, Jerez-Xérès-Sherry and Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda, available in English and Spanish. Your progress is saved only in the language you start in, so pick one and stay with it. The site does not state clearly whether a certificate is issued.
3. Aragón Wine Expert
The regional government of Aragón runs this platform with short courses of 60 to 90 minutes on the region's appellations, organic wines, tasting and food pairing, finishing with an AWE certificate. Courses are in Spanish only, which makes this a great choice for Spanish speakers who love Garnacha.
Portugal
4. Wines of Portugal Academy
Six modules cover history, regions, grape varieties, wine styles and food pairing, with a quiz after each one that needs an 80% score to move on. You receive a certificate of completion at the end. Available in Portuguese, English and Japanese.

7. Prosecco DOC Academy
Eight video lessons cover the history of Prosecco DOC, terroir, the Glera grape, production, styles, rosé, authenticity and a few fun facts. Before you pick a course
Every course above is brilliant for one region. Most of them move quickly through the basics, so they work best when you already know how to taste, what acidity and tannin do, and how to read a label.
If you want that foundation first, I put the essentials into one short guide, Wine Confidence. It is on sale right now, and it makes every regional course easier to follow.
Already past the basics? Go deeper with my guides on fermentation and aromas or on wine and food pairing.

Where to start
Pick the region you already drink most often. An hour spent on a wine you know by taste sticks far better than a general textbook, and once one region makes sense, the next one gets easier.

FAQ
Are these wine courses really free? Most sites on this list state it explicitly. For a few, such as New Zealand and Prosecco DOC, no price is shown on the course page, so check the registration step before you start.
Do I get a real certificate? Most courses issue a certificate from the regional body or producer after a final test. These certificates show real knowledge of a region, but they are not a replacement for a WSET or Court of Master Sommeliers qualification.
Which free wine course is best for beginners? Rioja Wine Academy, Champagne Education and Wines of Portugal Academy all start from the basics and build up step by step.
